    Liebe Frau Steineck,

    Danke nochmals herzlichst
    Ihr

A wonderful site and tribute to a great man.As I read the text and viewed the drawings I was able to walk to my garage and view the actual embodiements of these inventions on my 1958 356 coupe. It allowed for me a tangeble link from the always difficult creation/ideation process to the finished product. The 356 shares an equal space with my 1930 Bugatti T-35B..two timeless designs realized by dedicated teams led by true visionaries. Congratulations on honoring your grandfather in such a sincere and passionate manner. David Willis-USA crumb@parkavenuediamonds.com

An interesting website, dedicated to a brilliant designer - Erwin Komenda. I have been studying the history of the Volkswagen for years, and have this year completed a CAD reconstruction of the first prototype, the V1. To the creator of this wonderful site I commend you. What a delight. I have owned Porsche cars for the past 20 years and I was not aware of Erwin until Freeman Thoman, President of DaimlerChrylser Advanced Design, Pacifica USA said that he was an ardent follower of Komenda's design philosophy. I have now added a very important piece of Porsche history to my knowledge bank, and for this I am very happy. Thank-you Roselyn

A well deserved and much needed site acknowledging the genius and design eye of the legendary Erwin Komenda. His design of the Porsche 356 is timeless and was the acknowledged genesis of "Butzi" Porsche's design for the Porsche 911. There is still a little bit of Erwin Komenda in every Porsche built today. And for that matter every Volkwagen Beetle (one of the world's most successful automobiles). Erwin is unfortunately forgotten by many today, when other less worthy individuals in automotive history are remembered. Hopefully your website will help get him the credit he truly deserves. Mr. Komenda designed the body and other elements of the most popular car in history, the Volkswagen, a fact of which most of their owners are not aware. The air cooled VW Bug remains an extremely popular car in America has become a global icon, benchmark and standard to which countless comparisons are made. I wonder if Mr. Komenda could conceive of the impact his design would have on the motoring world? I have been driving them for over 40 years and own three VW Beetles. They are tacit members of our family. Thank you, Mr. Komenda. Jerry Longden, Santa Rosa, California.

Often, after having parked my 911, I often glance back to revel in it's form. Its' ever fascinating lines are testimony to your fathers' towering intelligence and artistry. For those owners and those interested in knowing the real genesis of the unique and timeless 911 shape, Komenda stands head and shoulders above all in the pantheon of design. All one has to do is attempt to name another product design, any design, who's basic aesthetic values have remained and thrived over eight decades. Raise a glass to Erwin and to his masterstroke and to driving in its' purest form. Mark Peters

Thank you for this insight on one of the greatest auto designers. His rolling legacy speaks for itself, but Your Grandfathers uncompromising principals are also seen in how he "never raised his hand" only calling him "Mr. Hitler". I will (poorly) translate the following part of it in english:

A statue for Erwin Komenda

Most people think, that the old Ferdinad Porsche designed the VW beetle (at the background). But it was Erwin Komenda, the man left on the picture, who was responsible for the most successful car of the last century. If you click on his name, you will enter a website that brings a tribute to this brilliant man. It is disturbing me, that Harm Lagaay has been continuously highlighted by Porsche, but that a man of a much greater magnitude has become the victim of scissors. While he was the designer who created the specific shape of Porsche. The young and ambitious Butzi (the big boss’ son) and the experienced Komenda often quarrelled about the shape of the new 901. Ferry has often covered his son by overruling Komenda. Nevertheless, Komenda’s contribution was most important. The – at that time – 27 year old Butzi may have been a good moulder, for the design and construction of a new car he had to lean on the skills of the experienced Komenda.  The fundamental character of this modest  man towards the Porsche clan would break him up. In 1965, he was fired ingloriously. The poor man did not overcome this and died a  year later, at the age of 62. As long as there is no statue of Komanda at the gate of the Porsche factory, I find all the tributes to Harm Lagaay grossly exaggerated. Lagaay may have scored nicely in terms of sales, there is more in living than money. Komenda has laid the superb basis from a primitive sign table - without CAD/CAM - on which Lagaay is now dancing with Wiedeking exuberantly.

I know it is outdated, since Lagaay left, but I leave the publication as it was since 2004.
